Mount Sinai Health System to Close Beth Israel Hospital Campus due to Ongoing Deficit

Citing a years-long deficit, the Mount Sinai Health System will close the Beth Israel Hospital campus on 16th Street in Manhattan.

The administration plans to initially reduce the number of inpatient beds and then operate with fewer beds as the campus “gradually” closes, Mount Sinai spokeswoman Lucia Lee confirmed yesterday.

He added that Mount Sinai made the decision because of mounting financial pressures and “years of agonizing debate and analysis.” For now, the hospital and its emergency department remain open.

The spokeswoman says that over the past ten years, Beth Israel has suffered losses exceeding $1 billion and is on track to lose $150 million more this year.

Mount Sinai says it will offer affected staff jobs with the same titles and salaries at other locations in the system.
