Two executives of the Gyeongin headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Democratic Trade Unions, who were indicted on charges of forcing construction companies to hire union members, were sentenced to prison and suspended sentences, respectively. On the 14th, the Incheon District Court sentenced Mr. Additionally, Mr. B, who was indicted on the same charge, was sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of probation. Mr. A and others were indicted on charges of threatening construction companies to hire union members belonging to the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions at three construction sites in the Incheon area from June 2021 to December 2022, thereby forcing 233 union members to work. The prosecution judged that their actions resulted in property gain for members of the construction union who were hired by construction companies, and applied joint racketeering charges to them. They were also accused of forcing the cancellation of an employment contract with a member of another union, but it was only an attempt. Mr. B was accused of forcing the defendants to write a non-punishment application, but it was only an attempt. The construction union’s defense attorney has argued that the hiring was legal and occurred through hiring-related negotiations with the construction company. However, the Incheon District Court did not accept the defense lawyer’s argument, saying, “The notice of harm exceeded the socially acceptable range.” In a phone call with the Hankyoreh on this day, a lawyer from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, who represented Mr. was not sentenced. “We believe the sentence is excessive and plan to appeal,” he said. The Incheon headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions plans to hold a resolution rally to call for the release of construction union members nationwide who have been arrested in similar incidents.
