Russian-Style Drones Found on Romanian Territory: NATO Statement

Fragments of Russian-style drones have been found on Romanian territory for the third time, NATO said on Wednesday. Alliance spokesman Dylan White said in a statement that the Romanian ambassador had informed allies of “Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure near Romania.” However, he added that “NATO has no information indicating any deliberate attack by Russia against allied territory.”

As a member of NATO, Romania is a party to the NATO Mutual Defense Agreement. On Saturday, Romanian soldiers found fragments of a drone around the eastern village of Plauru near the Ukrainian border, and Bucharest announced on Sunday that it had protested to the Russian government. Early last week, drone debris was already found in the Plauru area, opposite the Ukrainian port of Izmail just a few kilometers from Saturday’s discovery. According to Dylan White, Romania has “informed allies that, for the third time, fragments of drones similar to those used by Russia have been identified on Romanian territory.” Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed the situation in a phone call over the weekend. Stoltenberg said on the X Network (formerly Twitter) that there was “no indication of an intention to strike NATO, but the strikes are destabilizing”. He also welcomed the US decision to deploy more F-16 fighter jets for NATO air policing.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO has been trying to prevent the war from spreading to its member countries. Romania has stepped up surveillance and security of its airspace following repeated Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and infrastructure along the Danube.
