The Banyuwangi Regency Government, East Java is targeting vaccination human papillomavirus (HPV) for around 21 thousand female students in grades V and VI of elementary schools (SD) by visiting each school as an effort to accelerate vaccination.

Acting Head of the Banyuwangi District Health Service, Amir Hidayat, said that the HPV vaccine is given to protect oneself from infection human papillomavirus. This infection is the cause of cervical cancer.

“A total of 21 thousand female students are targeted for vaccination. The details are 10 thousand class V students and 11 thousand class VI students. Class V students will receive the first dose of the HPV vaccine, while class VI students will receive the second dose of injection,” said Amir Hidayat in Banyuwangi, Thursday .

He explained that class VI students had received their first dose of vaccination last year. In Banyuwangi, this program is running for the second year.

According to Amir, cases of cervical cancer have increased nationally in recent years, including in Banyuwangi. Even though the number of cases is relatively low, an increase has been observed.

“There are cervical cancer sufferers in Banyuwangi, but not too many. The trend in recent years has been an increase,” said Amir.

Therefore, said Amir, HPV vaccination will continue to be intensified in an effort to prevent the risk of this dangerous disease.

The Banyuwangi District Health Service, said Amir, is targeting all female students to be vaccinated against HPV by next October. To maximize vaccination, the department is deploying vaccination teams to all elementary schools in Banyuwangi.

“Because the target is school children, we are the ones who come to school. Health workers from all health centers will come to schools according to schedule,” he said.

Apart from HPV vaccination, the Health Service also sent a team to carry out vaccinations measles and rubella (MR). Vaccines are given to grade I elementary school students.

“The MR vaccine is an old program that was given to prevent the risk of measles and rubella. The MR vaccine is an old program, and we are bringing it together, because the month of immunization for school children is underway,” said Amir.
