Paris St.-Germain had already not named him in the Champions League squad – now it is clear why: Marco Verratti is leaving the Parisians for Qatar to the first division club Al-Arabi SC. Both clubs confirmed this on Wednesday evening. While numerous players from top European clubs moved to Saudi Arabia this summer, Verratti is drawn to the host country of the last World Cup.

Saudi prices are still paid in Qatar: According to information from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Verratti’s new club is transferring a transfer fee of 45 million euros to PSG for the 30-year-old. This would make the Italian international the most expensive transfer in the history of the Qatari league, whose transfer window is open until September 18th.
Verratti moved to PSG in 2012. Since then he has played 276 Ligue 1 games for Paris. The 30-year-old scored seven goals and 42 assists. In the Champions League, the midfield strategist was used 79 times (3 goals, 9 assists) for the French capital. With the “Red-Blues” Verrati won the French championship nine times and the French Cup and League Cup six times each. However, he was denied a chance to win the Champions League, for which those responsible at PSG have been investing hundreds of millions of euros in the squad for years. In return, “the little owl”, as the 1.65 meter tall Verratti was called in Paris, won the European Championship with Italy in 2021.

Verratti plays in a team with Thiago’s brother
Verratti is immediately the top player at his new club Al-Arabi SC. Well-known names in the squad of the reigning Qatari Cup winners are ex-Bundesliga defender Abdou Diallo (Mainz, Dortmund, Leipzig) and Rafinha, who comes from FC Barcelona’s youth team and played together with Verratti at PSG between 2020 and 2022. Rafinha is also the brother of former Bayern star Thiago Alcántara.
