Ukraine has been exporting grain through a northern Croatian port for more than a year, a Croatian official told the AFP news agency. The grain travels by rail via Hungary to Croatia. The amount is only a fraction of the millions of tons of grain that Ukraine produces annually.
Although located hundreds of miles from Ukraine’s western border, Croatia has become an unlikely transit point for the country’s grain due to the Black Sea blockade by the Russians. About 100,000 tons of Ukrainian corn and wheat have left the northern Croatian port of Rijeka since May 2022, the head of the port’s grain terminal Marino Klaric said. (Unsplash / Kees Streefkerk)

The Croatian Prime Minister said earlier this month that Zagreb plans to tranship more Ukrainian grain through its own ports. Plenkovic called Croatia ‘the Mediterranean door to Central Europe’.
