Jakarta –
Sad news is happening in the industry anime Japan. After 70 years of existence, the Tokyo Laboratory, which was founded in 1955, will close permanently in November.
Tokyo Laboratory is a company owned by TOHO that has worked on editing, archiving and developing anime. In its heyday, Tokyo Laboratory was the first place to store original anime for films and television series due to its large storage capacity.
Franchise like NarutoMobile Suit Gundam, Astro Boy, Detective Conan, and other major anime titles have used the company’s services.
In an announcement shared this week, Tokyo Laboratory plans to dump all of its original films by the end of October.
“We have contacted content or animated film creators about the recordings they have stored, but some clients have not been contacted,” said a statement from the Tokyo Laboratory.
Until now it is not known what original documents remain at the Tokyo Laboratory. But the renowned anime historian and director hopes all original footage will be preserved.
One of the reasons for its permanent closure is that technology is changing everything. “For decades, we have seen film and television move into the digital era. The anime industry has also taken the same path and led to our dissolution,” wrote Tokyo Laboratory.
Currently, Tokyo Laboratory confirms that there is a lot of anime switching to digital cinema storage which makes the company have to run aground.
This announcement began in November 2022, Tokyo Laboratory and its parent company TOHO announced that Tokyo Laboratory had ended its processing business. These companies decided that it would be difficult to continue due to changes in the business environment, including the increasing movement towards digital cinema package (DCP) distribution, or the collection of digital files to store and distribute digital cinema.
Tokyo Laboratory was founded in April 1955. The company has worked on video editing, film development and archiving on various anime. The company also has scoring systems, customization, data management and an in-house VFX team, for video services such as digital cinema support for theaters.
TOHO forms a business alliance with post-production company IMAGICA Lab. in September 2021 with a focus shifting to digital video delivery versus physical delivery.
