Direct speech: “From today, 16 minutes to be exact, Estonia is banning entry to all vehicles registered in Russia. They are not invited here to enjoy the privileges that freedom has to offer until Ukraine achieves victory.”
In this way, Estonia will fulfill the recommendations of the European Commission, according to which EU countries are not allowed to allow private cars with Russian license plates into the EU territory.
“The goal of sanctions against Russia is one – to force the aggressor country to retreat to its borders.
Since the European Commission has just clarified the existing sanctions, and Estonia considers it necessary to use all opportunities to increase the cost of Russian aggression, we have come to the conclusion, in consultation with the authorities of Latvia and Lithuania, that restrictions are effective provided that sanctions are jointly imposed,” the Minister of Internal Affairs is quoted as saying. If a vehicle with Russian license plates arrives at a border checkpoint, the Tax and Customs Department will carry out the appropriate procedures. The user or owner of the vehicle will have to return to Russia with the car or cross the border without it.
