HomePod supports third-party music services, but the number of services that work with Apple’s speaker can be counted on one hand. In addition to Apple Music, you can actually only choose Deezer in the Netherlands, so any potential newcomer is a bonus. For example, it has been discovered that YouTube Music will soon work with the service. At least, if we can believe the app’s code.
‘YouTube Music will soon support the HomePod without AirPlay’
The discovery was made by X user (formerly Twitter) @aaronp613. The logo of the Home app has been discovered in the code of the YouTube Music app. The file name ytm_connect_with_homepod.png has also appeared in the app and it is therefore no big secret what YouTube is currently working on or at least experimenting with. It is therefore very likely possible to connect the music service to the HomePod from the YouTube Music app.

This connection with the HomePod has several advantages. This way you can use Siri on the HomePod to control your music. It is not necessary to say that this must be done via YouTube Music, because you can set this as the default. You can then not only play your favorite artist or song, but also add music to a playlist or library. Because YouTube Music is built into the HomePod, you no longer have to use AirPlay from an iPhone. Another advantage of this is that everyone in the house can play YouTube Music on the HomePod, even if the account owner is not at home.

As of iOS 17, Apple has an improvement coming to the HomePod when it comes to the use of apps and music services. You can soon also use Siri on the HomePod to ask to play music via a streaming service that does not work with the HomePod as standard, such as Spotify. The HomePod will then automatically search for the nearby iPhone and connect to the relevant app on the iPhone to play the audio on the HomePod via AirPlay. This way you can still use Spotify on the HomePod, although it does not work as seamlessly as with the standard support as is currently possible with Deezer and soon with YouTube Music.
