Thuringia wants to put some of the previously unspent EU money into a loan program for medium-sized businesses. Around 34 million euros are to flow into the state development bank’s “Thuringia Dynamics” loan program, the State Chancellery announced on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting in Erfurt. Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD) suggested this because, according to his ministry, 270 million euros from the EU funding period until 2020 have not yet been paid out in Thuringia.
That is at least 23 percent of the funds that the Free State received from the European Regional Development Fund between 2014 and 2020. The money must be settled by the end of the year in order not to expire. According to the government, the responsible ministries have so far approved 96.4 percent of the EU funds, but only 76.9 percent have been paid out.
There are problems especially in the construction sector. The 34 million euros for the loan program is a realistic amount that can still be used for the economy by the end of the year, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Economic Affairs. However, approval from the EU Commission and an EU committee is required for this procedure. “The responsible ministries are still required to take all measures to speed up payments and audits,” said the State Chancellery.
