Arnold Bruggink finds it difficult to analyze his own work as technical director of FC Twente. It is not without reason that he sometimes asks former ESPN colleagues for their opinion.

“Then I’ll send Kenneth Perez a message: what do you actually think about this? It could be about anything. I’m sure I’ll get an honest answer from Kenneth. You yourself end up in a kind of tunnel, I already notice that,” says Bruggink Football International. When he steps into his ESPN role, he mainly looks at the wingers. “That is the big difference compared to last year. From a distance you would conclude: Twente has not improved in those positions.”
Twente saw two dangerous wingers leave with Virgil Misidjan and especially Vaclav Cerny. It was not without reason that Bruggink wanted to sign Ruben van Bommel. However, he chose AZ. “I’m still disappointed about that, yes. I had the strong impression that Ruben would choose between AZ and Twente. I believe very much in that boy, in his way of playing. He really has something that we really needed. Depth in his game, speed. Strong stoic character too.”

“We have put a lot of time into him,” Bruggink continues. “I have been to Meerssen twice. It was great fun, of course I know father Mark very well. I feel like we did everything we could to get Ruben, but it was not enough. Perhaps we should have gone even further financially.” “I would have loved to have him. And I think he would have fit in here very much.”
