Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn | Exclusive Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum

An exhibition is now being dedicated for the first time to a never-completed commission for the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) from the New York borough of Brooklyn. “Picasso: A Cubist Commission in Brooklyn” will be on display at the renowned New York Metropolitan Museum from tomorrow until January 14th. The commission came in 1910 from Hamilton Easter Field, who lived in a house in Brooklyn.

The artist and collector met Picasso in Paris and asked him by letter to equip his library with up to eleven specially made cubist paintings.

Picasso, who never traveled to the United States, worked on the commission in his Paris studio but did not complete it until Field’s death in 1922. In addition to historical documents such as Field’s original letter, the show now features numerous sketches and works that Picasso made while working on the commission.
