‘Can I charge my phone?’ It’s a question that many guests ask in many homes. Many people will have USB-C and Lightning at home, but there are also many households that only have USB-C or only Lightning.
The problem that not every phone uses the same charging cable is broader and deeper than just not being able to charge everyone in the house. If all phones are compatible with every charging cable, we will need fewer charging cables and produce less e-waste.
Apple is co-creator of the USB-C standard and, with the 12″ MacBook, was the first manufacturer to release a laptop with only USB-C on board. The iPad followed in 2018. And then… it was quiet. All phones and many other devices, such as headphones, received USB-C en masse. The iPhone was left with its old and slow Lightning port.
Until now, because now there are finally the first iPhones with a USB-C port. According to many rumors, this is the prelude to an iPhone without a charging port, but that is not the case yet. Until then, thanks to pressure and legislation from the European Union, we live in a world in which every smartphone has the same charging port.
