NEW YORK — A tragedy unfolded at a Brooklyn intersection after a woman was struck and killed while crossing the street and pushing a stroller, according to senior police officials.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 pm at the intersection of 25th Avenue and Bath Avenue in Bath Beach, police sources said. That’s where the driver of a Dodge pickup truck was turning left onto Bath Avenue and hit the woman in the street.
The victim, a 66-year-old woman, was pushing a stroller containing a 2-year-old girl, according to senior police officials. The woman was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where she died. The girl was taken to Maimonides Hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
Our sister chain NBC New York exclusively obtained video showing three men, including the 56-year-old driver, trying to rescue the young woman after her stroller became trapped under the truck’s wheel. The driver continued at the scene and was then seen trying to remove the child’s empty stroller from under his wheel.
A witness who was at the intersection and saw the accident unfold said the truck “appeared out of nowhere, I wasn’t looking for it,” adding that the driver probably didn’t see the woman walking.
“When he stopped, I tried to yell at him and explain that the baby was under his car. I asked him to push back, but he pushed forward, and that made the baby cry a little more,” the witness told our sister network. NBC New York.
Sobriety and drug tests were performed on the driver. Police have not yet charged anyone in connection with the investigation.
An investigation is ongoing. Detectives were looking to track down any video of what happened to determine who had the right of way.
