France on Tuesday banned the sale of iPhone 12 phones on its territory because these devices, which Apple introduced in 2020, exceeded the maximum limits of the electromagnetic waves emitted by them and absorbed by the human body, according to the National Frequency Authority.
The authority explained in a statement received by Agence France-Presse on Tuesday evening that it had asked the company to “utilize all available means to quickly address this defect. If this is not done, Apple will have to withdraw the copies that were previously sold.”
French Minister of Digital Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot said in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper, “I have confidence in the company’s sense of responsibility that makes it comply with our rules. My job is to enforce them. If it does not do that, I am ready to order the recall of iPhone 12 devices in circulation.” .
He explained that bringing a smartphone into compliance with the standards “requires a simple software update.” Apple has 15 days to comply.
In practice, the iPhone 12 exceeds by 1.74 watts per kilogram the value of the regulatory limit for the amount of energy that the human body can absorb when holding the phone in the hand.
Barrow indicated that the phone recall request could be expanded to include the European market.
On Tuesday evening, the giant American group presents its new phone, which integrates a USB-C charging port, in accordance with European laws in force in this field.
According to the World Health Organization, “there is no indication to date that exposure to low-intensity electromagnetic waves is a danger to human health,” despite “extensive research” on this subject.
