Brazil’s Neymar Bewitched: Shaman Ritual to Prevent Goals in World Cup Qualifier

The voodoo doll hangs upside down, the shamans repeatedly prick it with small swords and call out their magic spells: Brazil’s superstar Neymar is said to be bewitched before the World Cup qualifier against Peru on Wednesday night (4 a.m.).

“We neutralized Neymar by tying up his feet. We tied him up so he is not in good shape and cannot walk and play well,” said shaman Felix Rondan.

Dressed in colorful ponchos, the group of traditional healers from the jungle, mountains and coastal regions called upon “Tayta Inti” (Father Sun) to help Peru in its match against five-time world champions Brazil. The shamans blew on their conches and shook their rattles as they performed their ritual in front of the National Stadium in Lima. They had set up a colorful altar with swords, amulets, flags and photos of players from both teams.

Ritual is supposed to prevent Neymar goals

The shamans had previously taken “Ayuahasca” – a strong hallucinogenic drink that is said to open the gate to the spirit world. Shaman Walter Alarcon said the ritual was aimed at clouding Neymar’s mind so that he “cannot achieve what he is looking for, which is goals.”

At the start of the World Cup qualifying, Brazil won 5-1 against Bolivia, with Neymar scoring two goals – leaving the great Pele behind as the Selecao’s record goalscorer. (sid/lsc)
