Leo Borg, 20, was close to a bang right away in the Davis Cup finals.
But the Swede was beaten by Cristian Garin after a dramatic three-setter.
– It was a tough match and Leo played fantastically, says Garin in the victory interview.
It was tough opposition directly for Sweden and Leo Borg in the Davis Cup finals. The Swede, who is ranked 334th, was pitted against 103rd-ranked Cristian Garin, who last summer made it to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
But Borg stood up well.
After losing the opening two games, Borg responded and served home the next game and followed up by breaking Garin’s serve. The first set went all the way to a tiebreak, but there Garin won by the smallest possible margin.
The second set, however, went Borg’s way. The 20-year-old broke Garin’s serve at 4–2 and was then able to move on and take home the second set 6–3.

It set the stage for a dramatic decision.
Garin and Borg were followed for a long time but at 6–5, Garin shifted gears, broke Borg’s serve and secured the victory (7–6, 3–6, 7–5).
– It’s an unimaginably fine performance by Leo, says expert Magnus Gustafsson in SVT’s broadcast.
Continues through the evening
Later on Tuesday evening, Elias Ymer, ranked 175th, plays against 22nd-ranked Nicolas Jarry.
The playoffs are currently being played in the form of group games in four host cities, with Sweden in Bologna, Italy. The top two teams from the four teams in each group advance to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final in Malaga, Spain later this autumn.
On Thursday, Sweden faces Canada and on Sunday one of the absolute top nations, Italy, awaits.
