Ubisoft is postponing its free-to-play multiplayer shooter XDefiant for several weeks due to certification issues for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The developer expects a release in early or mid-October, depending on how this process goes.
XDefiant was originally supposed to be released this summer, but due to a rejection by a console operator, the game was not yet allowed to be released for the accompanying console. said Ubisoft. The developer and publisher say they have been working to resolve compatibility issues since then. During this compliance process, Xbox and Sony check whether the game works properly in the ecosystem in question. For example, Ubisoft mentions the requirement that achievements are registered properly and that friend lists work properly.
According to Ubisoft, the specific release date depends on how the compliance process proceeds. If the developer ‘succeeds’ now, XDefiant could be released within weeks. If a conditional approval is issued, it will take until early to mid-October for Ubisoft to process the relevant points. The company says it expects the second.
XDefiant was announced in the summer of 2021 and was almost immediately criticized for its cartoonish style contrasting with the title prefix ‘Tom Clancy’s’. The author’s name should only be used for ‘realistic’ games, while XDefiant apparently has nothing to do with the author’s legacy. Therefore, his name was later removed from the title. XDefiant is a multiplayer arena shooter where teams of six players compete against each other. The game will be released for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One and PC.
