All the gadget of The Masked Singer is to reveal famous artists behind comic book-themed costumes, but the usual level of celebrity isn’t exactly A-list. Contestants included professional athletes, nostalgic artists, and singers who haven’t never really “broke”. Even the show itself tacitly acknowledged that its stars aren’t particularly star-studded by inviting a special one-off celebrity to kick off its 10th season: Demi Lovato.

Lovato is not one of The Masked Singer-she just stopped by to perform “What About Love” by Heart and promote her new album Reworked (which features rock covers of previous hits). But they played the game anyway, disguising themselves as “Anonymouse” and providing clues to the judges. “Just like Michelle Obama, Oprah and Angelina Jolie, I’m on a special list: Time’s 100,” was one of the clues (via Variety). The second clue was a concrete slab with “Anonymous” written on it, with the explanation: “This is a literal concrete clue.” My acting career has made me a talented mouse. (They’re Disney kids, you know?)

“When I discovered that The Masked Singer I needed a mystery guest to celebrate their 10th season, I knew I was the right rodent for the job. I started working young. But my big break came when I was able to show my voice,” Lovato said in her mysterious voiceover. “When my future looked bright on the outside, I was battling demons on the inside. The more I pushed, the more I felt myself slipping. I was trapped in bad decisions. And finally, I hit rock bottom. But it was the wake-up call I needed to finally realize that I had so much more life to live. Now I’ve made it my mission to seek joy wherever I can. And that’s exactly what I’m doing here. It’s time for me to move on. You’ve all been guessing me for nine seasons! But when this mask comes off, you’ll see there’s no mouse like me.
Heavy enough to The Masked Singer, but between the monologue and the clues — and Lovato’s distinct voice — three of the four judges managed to correctly identify her. (Ken Jeong, the only outlier, guessed Lady Gaga.) “I wanted to be on your show because it seemed so fun, and it has been so much fun. And I can sing, so it’s the best of both worlds,” they told host Nick Cannon.

Other performers at Sunday’s premiere include returning contestants Rumer Willis and Michelle Williams, Victor Oladipo and Barry Zito, and Joey Fatone. Meanwhile, there is a new series of competitors: “Donut”, “Anteater”, “Hawk”, “Hibiscus”, “Diver”, “Gazelle”, “Royal Hen” and “S’More”. Don’t expect them to necessarily be Demi Lovato level, but they sure have their own charms.
