More companies also went bankrupt in August than in the same month a year earlier. An increase was particularly noticeable among transport companies. The bankruptcies in that sector follow a quarter of declining turnover.
The number of companies going bankrupt has been increasing for sixteen months compared to the same month a year earlier. In August, this numbered 308 companies, institutions and sole proprietorships, according to figures from statistics agency CBS.
In the trade sector, most companies went bankrupt, namely 86. That is 52 more than in July, but the number was also relatively low.
In the catering industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased significantly compared to a month earlier. In July, 28 companies went under, compared to only nineteen in August.

The transport sector is struggling with declining turnover
There was also a noticeable increase in the transport sector, where relatively the most bankruptcies occurred in August. This includes, for example, courier services, parcel storage and water transport.
The Dutch transport sector suffered declining turnover in the second quarter for the first time in two years. Revenues then fell by 5 percent, according to figures from CBS.
Income from freight transport fell because fewer items were transported. This was partly because there was less production in industry, construction lagged behind and international trade declined.
