The 34-year-old Portuguese was convicted in the trial on five counts of unauthorized access to IT systems, three counts of breaching the confidentiality of communications and attempted blackmail of the Doyen Sports investment fund. According to the public prosecutor’s office, Pinto demanded between 500,000 and one million euros from the doyen’s boss not to publish incriminating documents.
Pinto sees himself as a whistleblower
Judge Alves said it was clearly established that Pinto had hoped to get money. He described himself as a whistleblower. In total, he was accused of 89 hacking cases.
Between 2015 and 2018, he shared more than 18 million documents online and with a consortium of European newspapers that published details of the revelations. This included the tax behavior of stars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo as well as an accusation of rape against Ronaldo. Public prosecutors in several countries investigated.
