Morocco’s Death Toll Rises to 2,497 in Devastating Earthquake

The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior announced, on Monday, that the number of victims of the earthquake that struck the North African kingdom had risen to 2,497 people, while the number of injuries reached 2,476.

The Moroccan Ministry stated that this new toll “until ten o’clock local time” (the same Greenwich Mean Time).

Relief workers and members of the armed forces are still trying to find survivors under the rubble as a result of the earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale, according to the American Geophysical Institute, and 7, according to the Moroccan National Center for Scientific and Technical Research.

The earthquake that occurred on Friday night is considered the strongest earthquake ever measured in Morocco. Its center was in the Al Haouz province, located in a mountainous area south of the city of Marrakesh.

The difficulty of reaching the vast mountainous area struck by the earthquake hindered efforts to deliver aid to those affected, in addition to an unknown fate awaiting many of those trapped under the rubble.

Amid a widespread wave of solidarity, Morocco decided to respond to four offers of assistance made by Spain, Britain, the Emirates, and Qatar, to confront the repercussions of the earthquake, according to what the Ministry of the Interior announced on Sunday evening.

The ministry said: “The Moroccan authorities responded, at this particular stage, to the offers of support made by the friendly countries, Spain, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the UAE, which proposed mobilizing a group of search and rescue teams.”
