MSD Animal Health Launches Nasal Bovine Corona Vaccine for Newborn Calves – Local Immunity and Increased Milk Yield

Veterinary drug manufacturer MSD Animal Health is launching a bovine corona vaccine that can be administered nasally to a newborn calf. The vaccine provides local immunity and is not inhibited by antibodies from the colostrum.

Bovine coronavirus mainly affects calves. The virus causes infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, which also makes the calf more susceptible to secondary infections. The virus is also mentioned in relation to diarrhea in newborn calves and winter dysentery.

The existence of the virus has been known for decades, but detecting it has become easier due to new diagnostics. Research by MSD Animal Health shows that antibodies against the virus were found on all dairy farms in seven countries in Europe that were investigated. The virus was actively circulating at 80 percent of the companies.

‘American research shows that a calf with healthy lungs easily produces 500 kilos more milk in its first lactation. If the vaccine is administered at a young age, the highest yield is achieved,” reports MSD Animal Health. Bovine coronavirus is a different virus than the Covid-19 virus. Covid 19 does not pass to calves. The bovine coronavirus cannot spread to humans either.
