No Favorites in Women’s Super Cup Final: Benfica Coach Filipa Patão

Benfica’s coach, Filipa Patão, defended this Monday that “there are no favorites” for the final of the women’s football Super Cup between the Reds and Sporting, which will be played on Wednesday, in Aveiro. “I don’t like to point out favorites in competitions like these, in cup finals. Of course, we always have one team or another that could be at a better moment in the season than another team. And that doesn’t mean it’s a favorite,” he said.

The final of the women’s football Super Cup between the two Lisbon rivals is scheduled for 7:45 pm on Wednesday, at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro. “We have a lot of cases of teams, whether female or male, that are the teams that are best ranked at the time, or that perform best at that time, and, however, in that final of that competition there is a surprise”, added the Benfica coach, in a press conference previewing the match, held at the Benfica Training Center, in Seixal.

For Filipa Patão, the Benfica and Sporting teams both have their strengths, and their less good parts, and victory will ultimately come to the team that is more competent and makes fewer mistakes during the match. “Sporting has its strengths, it also has its less good parts. We also have our strengths and our less good parts. I believe that the team that is most competent at all times of the game will win, the team that make fewer mistakes, because, above all, that’s what football is made of. It’s made of whether we are efficient or not, whether we make more mistakes or not, and the opponent takes advantage of that”, he stressed.

The coach believes that, at this stage of the season, “there could be some surprises”. “I usually say that there are no big surprises, because the teams already know each other very well, but, at the beginning of the season, at the start of the season, it is possible for there to be one or another nuance, one or another different strategy to approach that game, which could bring other things”, he warned.

Faced with the largest number of games played by her players, Filipa Patão said that she prefers to have more games as she is competing for access to the Champions League, but said she is convinced that the red team has all the conditions to make a good recovery after the matches and to present himself in the best physical condition against Sporting.

The coach also left an appeal for the public to attend the Super Cup final, in Aveiro, as she believes that the two teams are capable of putting on a good show. “We have the right ingredients to have an excellent game. I believe it will be a Sporting team that will perform at full strength, and a Benfica that will also want to perform at full strength”, he highlighted.

The young Benfica player Andreia Faria was also present at the press conference, who also appealed for the public to attend Wednesday’s game. “Everyone likes to watch finals and we are going to promote a good spectacle for women’s football there, bringing as many people as possible and even people who, perhaps, are not as frequent in the stadiums”, she said.

Regarding the game, Andreia Faria recalled that the two teams know each other very well and said that Benfica, above all, “will have to worry about Sporting’s game process, with possible changes in the ‘Leonine’ team and [em] give everything to play good football and win the Super Cup”.
