Baldur’s Gate 3: A Resounding Success and Innovative RPG Mechanics

The game Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the biggest hits of this year, and the developers from Larian Studios have reason to be rightly proud of themselves. Although the PC version has a respectable average score of 96 percent on Metacritic and a full 95 percent of all players praise the game on Steam, the authors were a little more modest before the release and were worried about significantly lower marks. Head of Larian Studios Swen Vincke in an interview for the official channel Dungeons & Dragons he admitted that the team was concerned about the rating because of possible errors that the reviewers would encounter.

They thought they might be getting sixes and sevens, that some serious bug would appear that would break everything and people wouldn’t like it. Vincke says they were confident the content was good, but the size of the title scared them that something could go wrong, even though the game should usually be able to handle that somehow. “We didn’t expect it to go so well,” stated Vincke with relief.

Everyone experiences “their” story

On the other hand, he said, they expected that everyone playing Baldur’s Gate 3 would have a slightly different story. When people started talking about it, they realized that everyone had a slightly different adventure, and that’s something the studio wanted to achieve. The boss of Larian is pleased that people appreciate the title for what it is, because the team put a lot of work into it.

Although the game has some bugs, the positives clearly outweigh the possible flaws according to critics and fans alike. People appreciate the innovative approach of the authors, so in connection with BG3, the main issue is how the game developed the mechanics of the RPG genre within computer games.
