Port Said – Tariq Al-Rifai:

Today, Monday, the Faculty of Science at Port Said University revealed the reasons for the green color of sea water in several areas on the coast of Port Said.

She indicated in a statement that Dr. Farid Ibrahim El-Desouki, Dean of the College, asked the Department of Marine Sciences, headed by Dr. Mohamed Ismail, to immediately go to the beach, and it was found that the eastern coastal area of Port Said was exposed to a phenomenon of sudden gathering of green algae, scientifically called algal bloom, and it is usually caused by high temperatures. The increase in organic nutrients and the increase in the intensity of sea currents and others, explaining that these factors since recent days have led to the arrival of these green clusters of algae to the coastal strip with a width of a few meters, from 5 to 20 metres, and the area of these clusters varies according to the intensity of the sea currents, the intensity of the waves, and the nature and depth of the area.

The statement added that it was also observed that the sea waves throw these algae onto the beach sand and then they gradually dry out and die, and thus with time they will disappear due to the unsuitable beach conditions and the increase in water temperature for the sustenance of these suspended algae, which the sea throws with its waves towards the beach sand, getting rid of them, but their fate is to be exposed to the sun. Immediately, dehydration and then death.

She stressed that this phenomenon is considered very safe and does not indicate the presence of any pollutants according to field tests and measurements and then laboratory analyzes of samples taken from water and the suspended algae it contains from the coastal area.
