Submissive
Licking is actually part of a dog’s habit from the beginning, but for different reasons. Puppies lick their mother’s snout to ask for attention, care and especially food. The mother dog then responds by regurgitating half-digested food for her puppies.
But what about adult dogs that lick their peers or their owner (or visitors)? This means something completely different. This indicates that they are submissive to the owner or the person in question. With a lick in your face he actually indicates that he understands very well that you are the owner.
Not so fresh and dangerous
It’s cute anyway, but it’s certainly not fresh! Dogs also lick their wounds because this is said to speed up healing. For this reason, some people believe that a lick from a dog has a medicinal effect. But the opposite turns out to be true. A dog’s tongue is full of bacteria that can even be dangerous to humans, tall Guy Cornelisemeritus microbiology at the University of Namur, Belgium.
So… no matter how sweetly the dog means it, and no matter how much you want to be ‘cured’, you better not let your dog lick your face!
