International Matches Recap: Italy’s Struggles Continue

It’s not just football Germany that is suffering, many national teams experienced setbacks in the weekend’s international matches. A summary that – if it doesn’t comfort – at least distracts a little from the malaise of the DFB team.

Italy continues to stumble

Master coach Luciano Spalletti, who turned the Italian league on its head with SSC Napoli last season, only managed a 1-1 draw in his debut game as national coach in the European Championship qualification against North Macedonia. “A bitter debut for the new coach,” commented the “Gazzetta dello Sport”. The “Corriere dello Sport” summarized: “Another devastating evening for Italian football.” Spalletti didn’t see the whole thing in such a gloomy way: “The result is bad, but the team played well, we can build on that.” Tuesday is waiting Italy already has something like a final against Ukraine (8.45 p.m.) for next year’s European Championship in Germany. The Ukrainians are currently three points ahead in the table. Spalletti and the players wanted to forget the disaster in Palermo, when Italy lost 1-0 to North Macedonia on the way to Qatar and thus missed a World Cup for the second time in a row.
