He stated that the United States should stop opposing the ATACMS deployment of tactical ballistic missiles, while other leaders should increase their support.
Petraeus suggested that Kyiv could “change the dynamics of the war” if it proved capable of severing the land route between the Crimean peninsula and other occupied territories.
He said Washington was undermining those prospects by delaying some decisions, including the deployment of ATACMS missiles, which could be launched from the HIMARS missile systems already supplied to the Ukrainian armed forces and which have a range of 300 kilometers.
“I expect the United States to provide tactical missile systems that double the range of what we have provided,” Petraeus said.
“And I hope that these planes can also be put into service earlier than expected,” he added, referring to the F-16s promised to Kyiv by Denmark and the Netherlands with Washington’s approval.
