The Crisis of the Current Pension System: Frozen Pensions and the Burden on Future Generations

Today, no one doubts that the pension system in its current form cannot function in the long term. Simply, so much was added to pensions that so much money cannot be collected from existing workers, and therefore it is necessary to borrow for pensions. In addition to the fact that future generations will receive significantly less, they will also have to repay this debt.

It stopped working

Something is simply not right here. The current set has apparently decided that in the interest of the current reconciliation and the effort to buy the votes of pensioners, the current pensions will not be affected, but on the contrary, they will continue to increase. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has now informed that pensions will increase further in January, by an average of 380 crowns. The average pensioner will receive 20,693 CZK next year. That’s money he couldn’t even dream of a few years ago.

There is probably no one who would not want this money for pensioners. In the end, it is not an arbitrary amount and not everyone will reach it, although according to the latest data it has been achieved at least that almost eighty percent of pensioners receive a pension higher than 18 thousand crowns.

On the other hand, we have legitimate objections that pensioners today often receive more in net terms than many workers who earn on their pensions. Pensions will not be paid, so the entire amount will go to the account. However, many people still do not earn more than twenty thousand net. At the same time, the cost of living has also increased for them. But the problem is that while pensions have kept pace with inflation, this has not been the case with employee wages.

Freeze pensions

Perhaps even more pressing is the question of whether it is fair that the well-being of current retirees should affect future generations so significantly. They have to accept the fact that their pensions will be significantly lower. All the weight of the problem of the pension system falls on them.

However, in the interest of social peace, it would be more appropriate to begin the revision of the pension system immediately. In the optimal case, pensions should be reduced to a sustainable level, which would also correspond to the development of real wages, not just inflation. Unfortunately, such a step is probably impassable, but what could be done is to freeze pensions until the situation settles down, which could take several years. During them, pensions would not increase at all, because they simply increased to an already sufficient level.
