Twice a year, the firefighters, in collaboration with the Strasbourg Sports Office, organize a major cleaning operation on the Ill, the river which crosses Strasbourg. This operation consists of removing waste of all kinds present in the river such as bicycle frames, barriers, solex, handbags and even concrete blocks.
This cleaning has become a tradition in Strasbourg and it attracts a real audience. On Saturday September 9, the firefighters did their back-to-school cleaning in partnership with the Strasbourg Sports Office. In the cycling capital, firefighters notably recovered rusty frames during their “fishing”.
The fire chief, Clément Holtschi, explains: “We removed large concrete blocks, construction equipment, festive objects, decorations…” The operation took place under the astonished eyes of passers-by and tourists, more and more numerous as the morning progressed. Some even hope to find their stolen bike among the recovered objects: “This pile is huge, we don’t imagine there are so many things underwater. Me, I tell myself that maybe I will find one of mine, one of my many stolen bikes. »
The firefighters are counting on this operation to raise awareness among people about respecting the environment. Franck Meyer, Strasbourg firefighter diving director, declares: “It is useful for firefighters, for navigation and if it can have a future action to avoid this type of object thrown into the water all year round. . »
All items collected will then be sent to the recycling center at the end of the day. Come to the next cleaning to see if this lesson in civics has paid off, and not just when it comes to bikes.
