The PCI-SIG organization has not yet fully adopted the new PCIe 12V-2×6 power connector standard, which should replace the 12VHPWR connector. Despite this, FSP presented the first power supplies equipped with a 12V-2×6 connector at a recent event in South Korea, reports Quasarzone. The manufacturer also provided additional information about the new connector.

FSP will release three power supplies with the new 12V-2×6 connector: the flagship model Hydro PTM X Pro ATX 3.0 12V-2×6, the mid-range model Hydro G Pro 1200W ATX 3.0 12V-2×6, as well as the compact Dagger Pro ATX 3.0 12V-2×6 power supply for computer assemblies in Mini-ITX format. There are several obvious visual differences between the 12VHPWR connector and the new 12V-2×6, such as new connector markings, increased pin socket depth (from 4.2 mm to 4.45 mm), and an increased size of the auxiliary signal pin socket (from 1. 6 × 9.3 mm to 1.70 × 9.4 mm).

The new 12V-2×6 connector also has a shorter signal pin length (from 4 to 2.5 mm). This will prevent incorrect connection of the power cable connector to the socket, since otherwise the power supply will not switch to high power mode, thereby preventing potential overheating and melting of the video card power connector under load.

When developing a new PCIe power connector, PCI-SIG was faced with the task of getting rid of the main drawback of the original 12VHPWR – poor contact due to insufficient pressure of the connector to the connector. It is noted that this problem has been corrected in the new 12V-2×6. But at the same time, other connector specifications were also changed. According to FSP, the new 12V-2×6 has the following features:

current rating of at least 9.2 A per contact with all 12 contacts active and temperature limit limit of 30 degrees Celsius above ambient at 12 VDC; the rms value of the current should not exceed 55 A in one direction or another; Power cables and contacts must comply with specified current and thermal limits; The connector must withstand a pulling force of at least 45 N.

The corresponding software must also be updated. According to Quasarzone, FSP plans to release power supply models with the new 12V-2×6 power connector in mid-October. However, their cost is still unknown.
