Flights, overnight stays and bus trips: all holidays have become more expensive in the past year. Will prices ever drop again? And is it still cheaper to go on holiday out of season?
In brief
Holidays have become more expensive, even outside the high season. Last minute trips are also no longer as cheap as before. Air travel prices may fall if kerosene becomes cheaper, but sustainability makes travel more expensive.
“In general, all trips have indeed become more expensive. During the high season, but also afterwards,” says Hanita van der Meer, spokesperson for travel association ANVR. “But in July and August everything is still a lot more expensive than the rest of the year. That has been the case for years.”
Yet nowadays more and more people go on holiday just outside those busy months. “June and September have become popular months to go on holiday for people without children in recent years,” says Van der Meer. “Prices have also gone up in those months. But it is still cheaper than in the high season.”
The price of the trip also depends on the popularity of the destination and the temperature of the country during the high season. For example, Greece is very popular in the high season, but Dubai is especially popular at Christmas. It is warm there, while it is cold here. In the summer it is too hot there for many holidaymakers.
“The Dutch really look for the sun when they go on holiday,” says Van der Meer. “When the weather was bad here in July, the number of last minutes in the sun shot up by 17 percent.”
Those last minutes could be very cheap in the past, but those prices have also risen. “Although a last minute can still be a lot cheaper, package holidays for 200 to 300 euros were no longer available this year.”
If the price of kerosene falls, air travel prices will also fall slightly. But Van der Meer does not think that prices will drop very much. “Sustainability in the travel industry is becoming increasingly important. So I think that traveling will become more expensive instead of cheaper. Because if everything becomes more sustainable, we also have to pay for it. That is of course very good and necessary, but more expensive.”
