Devastating Earthquake in Morocco leaves over 2,000 Dead and Thousands Injured

The death toll from the Moroccan earthquake has risen so far to 2,012 dead and 2,059 dead, according to what Al Hurra’s correspondent reported on Moroccan official television.

The number of deaths rose to 1,293 in Al Haouz Province, 452 in Taroudant Province, 41 in Ouarzazate Province, and 15 in Marrakesh Prefecture.

While no new deaths were recorded in each of the prefectures and provinces of Chichaoua, Azilal, Agadir Idaoutnan, Greater Casablanca, Youssoufia and Tinghir.

The public authorities are continuing their efforts to rescue and evacuate the wounded, care for the injured victims, and mobilize all necessary capabilities to address the effects of this painful tragedy.

Morocco declared a three-day national mourning after the devastating earthquake that struck the kingdom on Friday night.

Prior to that, a statement from the Royal Court announced that King Mohammed VI chaired a meeting on Saturday evening to discuss the situation following the disaster, during which it was decided to “declare a three-day national mourning, with the national flags to be flown at half-mast.” Above all public buildings.”

The Royal Court added that the armed forces will deploy rescue teams to provide the affected areas with clean drinking water, food supplies, tents and blankets.

The Ministry of Interior said that “the rescue operation is continuing,” noting that “specialized intervention units consisting of search and rescue teams have been recruited,” while health facilities in various affected areas are witnessing comprehensive mobilization to provide the necessary treatments.

The vast majority of the victims are in governorates located south of Marrakesh and include small towns and villages scattered in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. Most of them are villages that are difficult to reach and the majority of the buildings in them do not respect earthquake resistance conditions, according to what experts explained in statements to local media.

The National Center for Scientific and Technical Research, headquartered in Rabat, reported that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 7 degrees on the Richter scale, and that its epicenter was located in the Al Haouz province, southwest of the city of Marrakesh, which is considered a major tourist destination.
