Pyongyang –
An iconic hotel in North Korea never had a single guest, even though the construction cost reached 1.6 billion pounds sterling or around Rp. 30.6 trillion.
North Korea It’s a very closed country. But today, some of the country’s landscapes can be seen on the Internet.
In the sparse landscape on the internet, the view of the Ryugyong Hotel is often seen. This is because this hotel has a fairly tall building, covering 105 floors and having a triangular shape. The location is in the heart of the capital city Pyongyangthus making this hotel so iconic.
Reported Daily StarSunday (10/9/2023), this hotel is named Hotel Ryugyongwhich has been under construction since 1987.
This hotel is supposed to be a place to stay for visitors to North Korea and is planned to have 3 thousand rooms. However, its construction was halted after the economic collapse following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, reports CNN.
The loss of one of its main trading partners, North Korea was hit, and in 1992 plans to develop this hotel were abandoned. It is reported that the exterior of the building has been completed, but the interior has not been completed.
Today, Ryugyong is considered the tallest uninhabited building in the world. This building is around 20 meters taller than the Shard in London which is 310 meters high. Although this building has many shortcomings, including a bent elevator shaft.
It was so run down that this hotel was even left without windows for 16 years.
“This is a very iconic building, but I think it’s important to consider its location in relation to the entire structure of Pyongyang. It’s like a kind of monument,” architect Calvin Chua told CNN.
The hotel has three sections, each 328 feet long and at a 75 degree slope. The venue is planned to have five rotating restaurants, which will provide unrivaled views of Pyongyang.
The controversial building was finally renovated in 2008 when Egyptian contractors from Orascom Group continued work. The company installs glass panels throughout buildings and governments North Korea even promised that this hotel would be completed in 2012.

However, after 11 years have passed, this hotel has not yet received guests. In fact, this building is now only used by the leader North Korea Kim Jong-un as a big screen for broadcasting propaganda.
More than 100,000 LED screens have been installed to display government messages and also serve as a backdrop for fireworks displays in the city.
German hotel group Kempinski previously announced it would manage the building, but they withdrew several months later. It is estimated that the construction of this building will cost 1.6 billion pounds sterling or around Rp. 30.6 trillion, or the equivalent of five percent of North Korea’s GDP.
