Cruise Days: Hamburg Hosts Largest Event for Cruise Ships

As of: September 9th, 2023 9:39 p.m

The Cruise Days, the world’s largest event related to cruise ships, is taking place in the port of Hamburg this weekend. The organizers are expecting a total of up to 150,000 visitors along the jetties and in Hafencity by Sunday evening.

The highlight was the big Hamburg Cruise Days Parade, which took place on Saturday evening and was visible and audible from afar with fireworks. Led by the “AIDAprima”, five ships moved down the Elbe together – accompanied by music and a pyrotechnic show. On Friday evening, the “Vasco da Gama” was staged in a similar way.

Nine cruise ships at the start

Over the three days, visitors will see large ocean cruisers as well as expedition and river cruise ships. Since Aida Cruises is a premium partner for the sixth time this year, the shipping company is represented with three cruise ships: In addition to the “AIDAprima”, the “AIDAperla” and the “AIDAsol”. There are also the “Mein Schiff 6” from TUI Cruises and the ships “Artania” (Phoenix Reisen), “MS Thurgau Chopin” (Thurgau Travel), “MS Sans Souci” (Plantours) and “World Voyager” (nicko cruises). see.

The “Vasco da Gama” is one of the cruise ships at the Cruise Days in the port of Hamburg.

At the end of the Cruise Days on Sunday, the two cruise ships “AIDAperla” and “AIDAsol” will be said farewell in the port of Hamburg at around 7 p.m.

Harbor bathed in blue light

The Cruise Days will take place regularly this year for the first time since the corona pandemic. The blue light has been providing a foretaste in many places in the harbor for a few days now. The Hamburg light artist Michael Batz gives the harbor a special atmosphere with the Blue Port. The Blue Port Hamburg started on September 1st. Every evening from 8.30 p.m. the harbor edge is bathed in blue light. Around 4,000 points of light are expected to shine this weekend.

Festival atmosphere on land

On land, between the fish auction hall and the Elbphilharmonie, there is a folk festival atmosphere with a lot of program – a mix of culture and entertainment, as well as many stands where you can quench your hunger and thirst. A children’s world has been set up near the Elbphilharmonie, with a hands-on circus and face painting.

Criticism from environmentalists

Hamburg is heading for a new record for cruise passengers this year. For the first time, more than a million guests are expected. Environmental protection organizations are clearly criticizing the Cruise Days. Malte Siegert from NABU Hamburg thinks that the Cruise Days are out of date. Hamburg offers an uncritical stage for cruise ships, most of which use heavy fuel oil to harm the environment and the climate.

Protest action on the Jan Fedder Promenade

On Friday afternoon, NABU protested on the Jan Fedder Promenade. Oil drums and banners read: “With bad air, there’s no reason to celebrate.” NABU, like the left-wing citizens, also criticizes the fact that the Senate does not oblige shipowners to turn off their engines in the port. Almost half of the cruise ships worldwide already have a so-called shore power connection, but only very few would get green electricity from land in the ports.

Small edition of Cruise Days last year

The Cruise Days usually take place every two years. In 2021 they were canceled due to Corona and were made up for in a smaller version the following year. Around 135,000 people came in 2022 – after around 500,000 visitors before the corona pandemic.
