This Sunday, September 10, the pioneers of Irish modern alternative music – the loud rockers “Gilla Band” – will perform for the first time in Riga at the “Palladium” concert hall.
A few years ago, the album “The Talkies”, released in 2019 by the quartet then known as “Girl Band”, took first place in “The Irish Times” poll for the best Irish album of all time.
“Gilla Band’s dark and angsty sound, which deconstructs the idea of pop music, is rightly praised by many. For example, the band recorded all the songs on The Talkies in one key and deliberately avoided pronouns in the lyrics. Perhaps without the Gilla Band, there would be no Idles, no Fontaines DC, and many other bands that emerged after encountering the Gilla Band sound, because this is music that actively resists tired notions of clear melodies and predictable lyrics,” that’s how the concert organizers announce these Irishmen.
The group started in 2011 in Dublin, but until the fall of 2021 it was called “Girl Band”. Later, the musicians decided that this name was misleading, which is also understandable – the band was formed by vocalist Dara Kiely, guitarist Alan Duggan, bassist Daniel Fox and drummer Adam Faulkner. The debut album “Holding Hands with Jamie” was released in 2015, then after a break of a few years due to health problems of the band members, “The Talkies” (2019) was released, and “Most Normal” was released last year.
