Defeat puts Akio junior girls’ chances at risk for semi-finals in African Junior Women’s Nations Championship

The Akio junior girls suffered their second defeat against Mali (32-25), yesterday in Tunisia during the second day of the African Junior Women’s Nations Championship. A new setback which jeopardizes their chance for the semi-finals of the competition.

Another defeat for the Malagasy national junior girls’ handball team. Yesterday, in the indoor hall of Monastir, the Akio girls were unable to perform a miracle by logically losing their second group match against the Malians (32-25). After a few minutes of observation round, the Malian machine started up. The score of 6-6 at kick-off was illusory for the Malagasy players.
During the first half, the Malians even widened the gap with a difference of six points (17-11). A defensive weakness not compensated for by a stalled offensive, credited with only 11 goals.

Moving away from the semi-finals

The gaps widened upon returning from the locker room. The Malians continue to impose their game. The gap widens as we approach the final whistle. It is difficult to hope for better when the Akio only shake the opposing net once while their rivals score 2 or 3 goals. At the end of the match, six points separated the two teams.

With this second defeat, the first being recorded against the Aiglonnes de Carthage of Tunisia (11-44) the day before, the team from the Big Island moves away from the semi-finals.
She will have to bounce back in her last two matches in Group B to hope to stay in the race. Today, our flag bearers will continue against the tough Egyptians, winners of Mali (64-15) on the first day, before finishing against Algeria this Tuesday. Only the best two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
In other results, Algeria signs its first victory against a Tunisian team (30-12) while in the other group, Guinea, already winner of the Democratic Republic of Congo (45-9), doubles the lead against to the Ivorians (49-29).
