The World Health Organization announced on Saturday that the Moroccan earthquake affected 300,000 people in Marrakesh and the surrounding areas.
A rare strong earthquake struck Morocco on Friday night, killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings from the villages of the Atlas Mountains to the historic city of Marrakesh.
820 people were killed and 672 injured, including 205 in serious condition, according to a tally issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Interior.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Al Haouz Province, southwest of the city of Marrakesh.
Destruction in the historic city
In the immediate aftermath of the quake, photos posted online showed people running and screaming near Marrakesh’s 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Moroccan media reported that the mosque suffered damage, but the extent was not immediately clear, and its 69-meter (226-foot) minaret is known as the “Roof of Marrakesh.” Moroccans posted video clips showing damage to parts of the famous red walls surrounding the old city of Marrakesh, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
