Uruguay managed to beat Chile with a score of 3-1 in the 2026 World Cup Qualification in Montevideo, Saturday (9/9) morning WIB. Darwin Nunez recorded two assists in this match.
Uruguay took a 1-0 lead when the match entered the 38th minute. This goal started from Joaquin Piquerez’s penetration who then gave the ball to Maximiliano Araujo on the left side.
Araujo then sent the ball into the penalty box and was received by Darwin Nunez. Nunez saw Nicolas De La Cruz appear from the second line and provide a mature pass. De La Cruz scored a goal against Chile without difficulty.
Uruguay then increased their lead to 2-0 through a goal from the captain, Federico Valverde. Valverde rattled Chile’s goal in injury time of the first half.
This goal came from De La Cruz’s pass towards Valverde who was outside the penalty box. After making one feint, Valverde fired a right-footed shot. The ball rolled into the bottom right corner without Chile’s goalkeeper, Brayan Cortes, being able to catch it.
Entering the second half, De La Cruz put his name on the scoreboard again in the 71st minute. In a counter-attack scheme, Valverde led the attack after receiving the ball in his own defense area.
Valverde continued to dribble the ball until he approached the penalty box. Valverde then sent the ball to Nunez who opened up space on the left side.
Nunez then saw De La Cruz in an open position in front of the goal. Nunez then sent a flat pass which allowed De La Cruz to easily put the ball into the goal.
Three minutes later, Chile was able to score a goal back through senior player, Arturo Vidal, who came on as a substitute. Vidal scored a goal with a wild ball from his teammate’s header which hit the post.
After the goal, Chile tried to apply further pressure. However, Uruguay was able to maintain the score 3-1 until the end of the match.
