The presence of the Mate 60 Pro has caused a stir in the United States (US), Huawei is now releasing another new cellphone. It’s called the Huawei Mate X5, a folding screen cellphone that will make Uncle Sam’s government even more nervous.
The reason is that the Huawei Mate X5 uses the Kirin 9000scSoC chipset like the Mate 60 Series. This chip is made at Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) with 7 nm manufacturing and supports 5G.
The arrival of the Kirin 9000s SoC chip surprised many US government officials. Because US export regulations prohibit Huawei, without special permission, from obtaining cutting-edge chips from any manufacturer that uses American-made parts to produce the components.
Additionally, to produce 7nm chips, chip manufacturers typically use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines to etch circuit patterns on silicon wafers. Only one company in the world, the Dutch company ASML, makes these machines and the company supports US demands not to send any EUV machines to China.
Huawei has received a special license that allows it to buy Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips modified to not support 5G signals and those chipsets power last year’s Mate 50 line and this year’s P60 series. But for the first time in three years, Huiawei is bringing home-made Kirin chips that support 5G in its new devices.
Indeed, the Kirin 9000s is still behind the A16 Bionic chip used by the iPhone 14 Pro. Even so, with export restrictions, the US government is curious about how Huawei was able to make the Kirin 9000s support 5G. An investigation will also be carried out to reveal this.
Huawei Mate X5 specifications
Huawei Mate X5 has two screens. The outer screen measures 6.4 inches with an LTPO OLED panel, resolution of 1,080 x 2,504 pixels, refresh rate of 120Hz and aspect ratio of 20.9:9. Meanwhile, on the inside, it uses a 7.85 inch LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 2,224 x 2,496 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz.
Both Mate X5 displays support 1.07 billion colors, offering true-to-life images. In addition, there is support for the P3 wide color gamut, making every image on the screen appear bright and rich in detail. And Huawei has used Kunlun glass for protection, increasing overall durability.
In terms of dimensions, the Mate X5 folds into a compact form, measuring 156.99 x 72.4 x 11.08 mm. And when opened, the X5 measures 156.9 x 141.5 x 5.3 mm. In terms of weight, the Vegan leather model is around 243 grams, while the Sand color option is around 245 grams.
Huawei hasn’t compromised one bit when it comes to the Mate X5’s camera configuration. On the back, this device is equipped with a 50MP main camera accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide sensor and a 12MP periscope telephoto sensor.
To handle selfies and video calls, the Huawei Mate X5 comes with an 8MP camera on the inner screen and another 8MP sensor on the cover screen. The device’s camera has 2D facial recognition, which works even when you’re wearing a mask. Additionally, they have support for OIS/AIS stabilization, allowing users to get stable and smooth videos.
Regarding the engine, the Huawei Mate This cellphone runs Harmony OS 4.0.
This cellphone adopts an all-new antenna design which is claimed to offer better signal reception. Huawei’s Lingxi antenna is equipped with an AI algorithm that selects the optimal network to ensure optimal connectivity. The antenna around the device’s frame also features dual-mode tuning technology for better signal quality.
The Huawei Mate X5 packs a 5060mAh battery, which is more than enough to offer a decent screen on a full charge. And in terms of charging, the device has 88W fast wired charging support. Thanks to it, the battery will charge from 0% to 100% very quickly.
No less important is that the Mate X5 gets an IPX8 certificate, meaning it is water resistant. What’s unique is that this folding screen cellphone is equipped with touchless gesture control.
Huawei Mate X5 is available in various color options. There’s Feather Sand White, Sand Black, Sand Gold, Phantom Purple and Ayoma Di, which comes with a vegan leather finish.
Currently Huawei has opened pre-orders. Unfortunately they haven’t revealed the price of the Mate X5.
