The cover of the fortieth Astérix comic album De Witte Iris, which many comic lovers are eagerly awaiting, was leaked more than a month and a half before publication. Printing employees in France are said to have committed this deadly sin. Publisher Albert René has filed a report against them with the French police.
This is reported by Marike Timmermans, the Dutch spokesperson for Albert René. “The comic won’t be released until October 26th. The appearance of a new Asterix is a big deal, especially in France, it is the best-selling comic in the world. Only employees and a select number of journalists are allowed to view the book before the publication date. Strict confidentiality agreements must be signed for this.”
Employees of a French printing company apparently had no interest in secrecy: on Thursday evening the front and back of De Witte Iris appeared on sales site Vinted, where the comic was illegally offered for sale (for only 9 euros). Timmermans. “The publisher immediately called the police, who arrested the perpetrators today.”

It has never happened in the history of the Asterix comics that anything has been leaked in advance, the spokesperson said. The publisher turned necessity into a virtue: today the cover of the new comic album was shared by Albert René on Instagram and X, among others, and that generated a lot of free publicity in France. Five million copies of De Witte Iris are expected to be printed, two million of which in the home country. The comic will also be available in stores in Belgium on October 26.
Two figures are prominently depicted on the cover: Asterix on the right and a completely new character on the left, about which there is now intense speculation in the French press. Obelix and dog Idefix are of course also present, they can be seen in the background. The drawings in the new album are by Didier Conrad, the screenplay is by Fabrice Caro alias FabCaro.
