The European Earthquake Center reports an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 outside Marrakesh in Morocco.

The epicenter will be in the Atlas Mountains, 77 kilometers southwest of the city.

Pictures on social media show destruction to buildings.

Norwegian Kirsti Rogne is in Marrakesh. She says it’s chaotic in the city now.

– The earthquake itself was very scary and lasted a long time while plaster and glass crumbled all around. It’s still scary and hard to know what to do.

– People are leaving the medina, there is a steady stream of young and old. We stand a bit awkwardly and wait for the aftershocks, she says.

Awarah Sayed lives in Agadir with his wife and children. There they also felt the earthquake, he woke up suddenly around 2330.

– Suddenly I felt the block we live in start to shake. Frightened, I ran to wake up my wife and grabbed the three-year-old girl and ran outside. It’s the worst I’ve come across. All the people who live in the area are out here in the streets and no one dares to go back inside.

The epicenter is around 100 kilometers north-east of Agadir, which is on the coast.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries following the earthquake.
