Virgil van Dijk was sentenced to a fine from playing for cursing the referee. He did this after receiving a red card during the fight Newcastle United.
Van Dijk received a red card at the moment Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Premier League match at St James’ Park, Sunday (27/8/2023). Van Dijk was sent off by the referee, John Brooks, in the 28th minute after violating Alexander Isak in front of the Reds’ penalty box.
Van Dijk was assessed by the referee as the last player in Liverpool’s defense when he violated Isak. Therefore, the referee immediately withdrew the red card.
After getting a red card, Van Dijk cursed at the referee. He also argued with the fourth official on his way to the dressing room after being sent off.
The FA is carrying out an investigation regarding the disgraceful actions that Van Dijk committed against Brooks. Van Dijk later admitted that he said inappropriate words to the referee.
The FA has now imposed sanctions on Van Dijk due to this. He was sentenced to a one-match ban and a fine of 100 thousand pounds or the equivalent of 1.9 billion rupiah.
Van Dijk had previously missed Liverpool’s match last weekend in their 3-0 win over Aston Villa. He was not allowed to play because he was banned from playing due to a straight red card against Newcastle.
Van Dijk’s ban on competition has been increased by one more match. He will certainly not play when Liverpool face Wolverhampton Wanderers after the international break.
“Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined £100,000 for breaching FA Regulation E3.1 during Liverpool’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on Sunday 27 August,” read an FA statement.
“The defender admitted that he acted in an inappropriate manner after using abusive and insulting words towards match officials after being sent off in the 29th minute, and sanctions were subsequently imposed by the independent Regulatory Commission,” the statement continued.
