TVAfter the fuss surrounding some ex-participants of ‘Temptation Island’ earlier this week, the case takes a new twist. The reality series will no longer be shown in the Netherlands for the time being. There are also no new episodes being recorded for a while. This was announced by Peter van der Vorst, content director of the Dutch channel RTL and producer SimpelZodiak.
The choice was made in response to the commotion that arose around the dating program. Fourteen participants have now reported to criminal lawyer Sébas Diekstra, because they say they have suffered from psychological complaints as a result of their participation in the program. The reports follow the news that former participants Aylin and Efrain announced last week. According to them, there would be manipulation of the candidates by the makers. In addition to the emotional trauma they allegedly suffered, Aylin said she made two suicide attempts as a result of psychological complaints resulting from the program.
Criticism of the dating program has increased in recent days. Program makers earn a lot of money ‘on the backs of people who are so seriously damaged by their program that they no longer want to be there’. “How can you still look yourself in the mirror?” asks Dutch MP Stieneke van der Graaf. “Broader research into reality shows is needed. After the abuses at ‘The Voice’, actions were already being initiated, such as the establishment of a complaints committee. The times of self-regulation in this sector are really over.” As far as she’s concerned, the program is gone forever.
Several clients find it surprising that the program is only now being paused due to the fuss
Sébas Diekstra, Lawyer
“We have asked RTL to press the pause button,” said a spokesperson for SimpelZodiak, the producer. “By the way, we had not yet started preparations for a new season of ‘Temptation Island’. We first want to know what exactly is going on and talk to Mr Diekstra.” He continues: “We hope to start discussions soon. Especially with the candidates to resolve this carefully. In addition, the makers adhere to strict guidelines and protocols that are evaluated annually with RTL.”
Sébas Diekstra’s response
Lawyer Sébas Diekstra finds it ‘remarkable’ that ‘Temptation Island’ is being paused now that there is a commotion about the program. He said this on behalf of his clients in a statement: “What is striking is that a large number of the complaints were already known,” Diekstra responds. “There was a mediation process with two clients, after which they received compensation of 30,000 euros. Several clients find it remarkable to say the least that the program is only now being paused due to the fuss.”
