No new episodes are being recorded for Temptation Island for the time being. RTL content director Peter van der Vorst and producer SimpelZodiak announced this.
The choice was made following the commotion that arose around the dating program. Fourteen participants have now reported to criminal lawyer Sébas Diekstra, because they say they have suffered from psychological complaints as a result of their participation in the program. The reports follow an interview that former participants Aylin and Efrain gave to this site last week. They stated that the program involved manipulation of the candidates by the makers. In addition to the emotional trauma they allegedly suffered, Aylin said she made two suicide attempts as a result of psychological complaints resulting from the program.
Content Director at RTL, Peter van der Vorst, responds: “The picture sketched in this article by lawyer Diekstra makes it even more urgent to enter into discussions with the reporters together with producer Simpel Zodiak. We already expressed this wish in a conversation with Diekstra earlier this week. We have not heard anything as of this response and have not received any new reports ourselves. We hope that he will accept our invitation as soon as possible, so that we can get a complete picture of the situation. We think it is extremely important to personally hear the experiences of these former participants themselves.”
Aftercare and penalty clauses
“We understand that there is a lot of reaction from various parties to what appears in the media. Many assumptions are incorrect. Including about aftercare and penalty clauses. Intensive aftercare is provided and the purpose of penalty clauses is discussed extensively with participants. That is never about reporting, only about spoilers and spoiling games. It is emphasized throughout the entire production process that reporting is always possible. Another assumption is a new season. No new season has been ordered yet and we will not take any new steps in this regard until we have more clarity. First the conversations with the reporters.”

“We have asked RTL to press the pause button,” a spokesperson for SimpelZodiak, the producer, said. “By the way, we have not yet started preparations for a new season of Temptation Island, but they are on hold for the time being. We first want to know what exactly is going on and talk to Mr Diekstra. We do see all kinds of stories appearing in the media that are untrue. That candidates are stuffed with alcohol, for example. They are only allowed to drink alcoholic drinks towards the evening, but this is monitored by production. In addition, they are carefully screened in advance. Not with one conversation but several. Moreover, they are carefully supervised not only during the program but also for a long time afterwards. We hope to have a conversation soon. Especially with the candidates and to resolve this carefully. In addition, the makers adhere to strict guidelines and protocols that are evaluated annually with RTL.”
Vanish forever
Criticism of the dating program has increased in recent days. According to ChristenUnie, program makers earn a lot of money ‘on the backs of people who are so seriously damaged by their program that they no longer want to be there’. “How can you still look yourself in the mirror?” asks MP Stieneke van der Graaf. wonders. “Broader research into reality shows is needed. After the abuses at the Voice, actions were already being initiated, such as the arrival of a complaints committee. The times of self-regulation in this sector are really over.” As far as she is concerned, the program will disappear forever.
It is not okay when candidates of these types of television programs are forced to go beyond their own boundaries

D66 calls for an end to so-called strangling contracts. In those contracts, candidates are instructed to keep quiet about the program, under penalty of ‘enormous penalty clauses’. “It is not okay when candidates of these types of television programs are forced to go beyond their own boundaries,” says MP Jeanet van der Laan. “Participants appear to have been put under pressure or manipulated to such an extent that they suffer from these types of complaints,” adds Lucille Werner (CDA). “If this is true, it exceeds all standards of decency.” The VVD calls for an investigation into the actions of the producer.
Viewer misled
As long as clarity is not provided about this quality quickly, the program cannot continue, says lawyer Royce de Vries. “If images or sound material are knowingly cut, so that the other partner – and the viewer – is misled, then that crosses a line.”
Although the program works with psychologists, there is little support for the program in the professional sector. “It is abject and unethical to expose people to the risk of severe mental suffering. Breakups and cheating are serious life events and not everyone can withstand them,” says psychiatrist Esther van Fenema. We should not underestimate the consequences of cheating, she says. “I see at the crisis service that people become suicidal, seriously confused or no longer sleep.”
