Huawei Mate X5: A Closer Look at the New Smartphone with Mysterious Chipset and 5G Support

Huawei comes with a new Mate X5 puzzle
Changes compared to the previous generation are more cosmetic
Under the hood ticks a mysterious chipset with support for 5G networks

Today, Huawei unexpectedly introduced a new flexible smartphone Mate X5. The chosen name may seem confusing, as it is a direct successor to the Mate X3 model – the Chinese manufacturer probably omitted the number 4 due to superstition, as it is considered unlucky in some Asian countries. On the other hand, if Huawei had used the designation Mate X3s, they probably wouldn’t have made a mistake, because there have been few changes compared to the Mate X3.

Huawei Mate X5: an easy upgrade within the limits of the law

The presented novelty looks similar to its predecessor, only the appearance of the photo module on the back has changed slightly, the rest of the improvements took place under the hood. The Huawei Mate X5 is a flexible smartphone with a book design a la the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, but it is thinner and lighter compared to it – it measures only 11.08 mm at the waist (5.3 mm in the open state) and weighs 243 grams. It also has IPX8 water resistance.

The presented novelty is equipped with two OLED displays. The outer one has a diagonal of 6.4″, Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 1-120 Hz, the internal display has a diagonal of 7.85″, a resolution of 2,496 × 2,224 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Both displays contain an opening for the front camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels, in the protruding module on the back we can find the following cameras:

50 Mpx main with aperture f/1.8 13 Mpx wide-angle with aperture f/2.2 12 Mpx with 5x optical zoom with aperture f/3.4

An unknown chipset and a decent amount of memory

The photo setup has not changed at all compared to the previous generation, at least on paper, but what has changed is the chipset used. Huawei does not boast about it anywhere in the specifications, but it is probably a 7nm Kirin 9000S with support for 5G networks made in the SMIC factories – the same mobile processor is apparently also found in the recently introduced Huawei Mate 60 Pro, although Huawei keeps a beaver of silence about it too. The phone will be available in several memory variants, with the maximum one offering 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. This is not the final capacity, NM type memory cards are also supported.

Wireless connectivity is represented by Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and 5G. Huawei is proud of its redesigned antennas, which are supposed to significantly increase signal reception, both in terms of hardware and thanks to special AI algorithms that select the optimal connection at the given moment.

Compared to the previous generation, Huawei also increased the capacity of the battery, which has a new 5060 mAh. It can be charged either with a cable with a power of up to 66 watts, or wirelessly with a power of up to 50 watts. Reverse wireless charging with a maximum of 7.5 watts is also supported. The operating system is HarmonyOS 4 with several new features – for example, it supports air gestures, which can be used to control videos, web pages or images in the gallery without the need for touch.

Price and availability

The Huawei Mate X5 will probably be available only in China, and in two basic versions – with a back made of glass or artificial leather. The colors will be white, black, beige, green and purple, and the customer will be able to choose 12/512 GB, 16/512 GB or the collector’s version of 16 GB / 1 TB. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not revealed the prices yet.
