“Each teaching staff is as heterogeneous as a school class. There are those with prior knowledge who have mostly learned the ropes on their own initiative. Then there is the large middle field – with a very solid level of knowledge. And then there is the ever-shrinking group of those who have no experience at all in the field of digital teaching.” And all needs are served by him, emphasizes Martin Brügmann (who now runs his own consulting institute called KURD, “Communication – Teaching – Guidelines – Digitalization”. The expert in digital teaching from his own pedagogical experience illuminates the pedagogical and didactic possibilities that the use of digital technology in teaching offers.

BREAKING NEWS!

Bestselling author Prof. Dr. Klaus Zierer (“Hattie for stressed teachers”) will present his theses on the “digitization madness” at BILDUNG.DIG!TAL – is education policy relying too much on IT shaping the teaching of the future?

Join the discussion when the professor of school education at the University of Augsburg and one of the most renowned educational researchers in Germany takes up the cause of teachers!

“You can do a lot more with a tablet than just letting your students do research with it,” says Martin Brügmann – what exactly he will present at the congress fair. For example? “You can take a photo of the lesson results with a tablet or document an experiment on video. Audio recordings are also easily possible. The devices can of course also support teachers in preparing and organizing lessons.”

How can I change my teaching with digital technology? How can students work with it? How can they work on projects together with this? These are questions that Martin Brügmann is repeatedly confronted with by his colleagues – and which he is happy to answer. “This is exactly where my training comes in. “The teachers should be able to apply what they have learned in everyday school practice,” he emphasizes. “I think that teaching with digital media is simply contemporary. I would like to encourage those who are not yet confident about this because they have always taught analogue lessons all their lives to just give it a try.”

It is often assumed that education using digital means is superficial: colorful images that students are given – but in the end nothing sticks. What is Brügmann’s experience? “I do not think so. Of course, I can offer the students a colorful fireworks display of images without this having any learning effect. Just because digital media is now being used does not mean that teaching will suddenly improve. The use of tablets offers us teachers completely new possibilities. For example, if I do an experiment with the students, I can record it on video so that you can watch everything again and again without having to repeat the experiment. The students can record the experiment description as audio. The use of digital media or devices makes lesson design more diverse and more individual for the learners.”

The main focus is on the better activation options that result from the use of the technology. “Activating students can of course also be done in an analogue way. But I believe it can be done better, more student-friendly and ultimately also more teacher-friendly with digital tools.”

New event format

Finding out first-hand information about trends and technology from experts, exchanging practical experiences and solutions with colleagues and discussing relevant questions on the topic in a competent group – this is what teachers, school management, school authorities and municipal IT managers can do new event format: BILDUNG.DIG!TAL, which will take place for the first time in Essen on September 26, 2023. The congress fair offers a wide range of lectures and workshops on current trends in the areas of digitalization and didactics.

In the topic of “Teaching and Learning,” for example, the focus is on the question: “What does specialist didactics offer so that digital education can be successful?” The answer is, for example: “Just learn to program. Practical examples for teachers.” Or: “Sex education needs an update – teaching in a diversity-conscious and interdisciplinary manner.”

Challenges with artificial intelligence (AI) and programs like ChatGPT are addressed in a separate focus: “How AI makes teaching easier, motivates students and how performance can be evaluated.” This then deals with practical school topics – such as digital communication between school and parents – as well as realistic future scenarios about what school management, school authorities and teachers can actually expect.

Digital school management (“Organization of the school with AI – from substitution and supervision planning to learning at another location”) is also addressed, as is the question: “What does subject didactics offer so that digital education can be successful?” This is, for example, about Language learning – or about “successfully working with German language learners”
