As Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei succeeded in launching smartphones equipped with cutting-edge semiconductors despite US sanctions against China, content ridiculing the US government’s regulations is spreading in China.
According to the Washington Post (WP) on the 7th local time, fake advertising videos and photos are being uploaded on Chinese social media that depict US Commerce Secretary Gina Lermondo as a ‘promotional ambassador’ for Huawei smartphones.
In the video, Secretary Lemondo says, “There is no secretary of commerce who is tougher on China than me,” and then poses with Huawei’s latest smartphone, the ‘Mate 60 Pro’.
Secretary Lemondo is a person who has taken a hard-line stance on sanctions against China, saying, “The United States has a whip and is ready to use it whenever necessary.”
WP analyzed that the fact that China Central TV directly posted this fake advertising video on the Chinese version of TikTok, ‘Douyin’, “suggests that there was some degree of official approval.”
In addition, WP reported that sarcastic comments were being posted on Secretary Lemondo’s

This meme spread late last month when China surprisingly launched a new smartphone, the Mate 60 Pro, with a 7 nanometer (one billionth of a meter) process processor.
Since the 7-nano process is usually possible only with cutting-edge semiconductor production equipment, the international community is paying attention to how Huawei succeeded in mass producing this processor under the United States’ strong sanctions.
Previously, the United States began imposing sanctions in 2019, accusing the Chinese government of stealing confidential information by installing hacking tools on Huawei’s communications equipment.
WP analyzed that the Mate 60 Pro, which was released amid this, is considered a product symbolizing the country’s technological advancement in China.
Meanwhile, the United States investigated the smartphone’s 7-nano process processor as concerns were raised that China had failed to control exports of semiconductors to China, or that some semiconductor companies may have violated regulations, given that it produced the Mate 60 Pro amid high-intensity sanctions. He said he had started.
