Green tea is distinguished by its many and varied health benefits, but “everything in excess is a deficiency,” and excessive consumption of this drink may have a negative impact on health.
Green tea has always been famous for its benefits and antioxidant properties. It helps prevent cell damage, enhances the fat burning process, protects against heart disease and regulates blood sugar. It also protects against brain aging and maintains oral health.
However, excessive consumption of green tea may have negative effects on health, due to the essential components it contains, especially caffeine and antioxidants.
Accordingly, the Times of India enumerates the side effects resulting from excessive consumption of green tea:
1- Stomach pain
Drinking green tea, especially on an empty stomach, may cause stomach pain and discomfort, because it contains tannin, which increases stomach acidity.
2- Headache
We advise people who suffer from migraines to avoid excessive consumption of green tea because it contains caffeine, which may cause headaches.
3- Insomnia
Although it contains a small amount of caffeine, excessive consumption of green tea may cause insomnia and lack of sleep, which may lead to other health problems.
4- Iron deficiency
Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in green tea may prevent the absorption of iron in the body, and thus may lead to iron deficiency. Therefore, experts advise adding lemon juice, which is rich in vitamin C, to tea because it helps enhance iron absorption.
5- Nausea and vomiting
Excessive consumption of green tea may cause nausea and vomiting. The reason is because it contains tannin.
6- Dizziness
The caffeine in green tea reduces blood flow to the brain, causing dizziness.
7- Liver problems
Excessive consumption of green tea leads to caffeine accumulation, which causes liver stress and damage.
8- Osteoporosis
Components in green tea prevent calcium absorption, which may lead to weak bones. Excessive consumption may also increase the risk of other diseases such as osteoporosis.
